TRIBUTE TO THE LATE PROF. (MRS). ANNA R. BARNES
BY THE GHANA SOCEITY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION (GSAP) AND THE GHANA ANIMAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION (GASA)

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10(KJV)
The Fellows, Executive Committee and the entire membership of the Ghana Society of Animal Production (GSAP) and the Ghana Animal Science Association (GASA) are still struggling to come to terms with the sudden call to eternity of our senior colleague, sister, friend, teacher, mother, mentor and Fellow of GSAP, Prof. Mrs. Anna Reynolds Barnes. On this difficult and painful occasion, we wish to express our deepest condolences to her immediate family especially her husband, Mr. Barnes and the children. For us, it was a privilege to have been part of Auntie Anna’s life. Although we would have wished Prof. was around much longer for us to enjoy the great camaraderie, the Lord knows best. It is unfortunate that at a time like this when The Ghana Society of Animal Production is actively reorganising, repositioning itself to be more innovative in its functions and be properly accorded its full-fledged professional body status, we should lose someone like Prof Barnes. Definitely she would have been a rich source of counselling and linking us up to the right strategies. We however take consolation in the fact that she played her part very well and contributed enormously to Meat Science and the Animal Industry within and beyond Ghana and, in the process, trained many students and stakeholders in the meat processing industry.

Prof. Barnes was known by many as a very focused, committed and vibrant academic always looking for results regardless of the challenges. She motivated all her students to work hard and achieve the best at all times.  She served on many national and international committees of the animal industry. She was instrumental in the organisation of the first ever “Pork Show” in Ghana in 1986 which helped to improve the consumption of pork and its products in Ghana. Prof Barnes was recognised as a Fellow of the Ghana Society of Animal Production. She was one of the very few women to have ever been accorded such honourable recognition in our professional society. Indeed, Prof. Barnes made us proud when she was appointed as the first female Acting Provost of the then College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences of the University of Ghana.

Prof. Barnes was a caring and beloved mother, a cherished senior colleague, a scholar and friend. The fraternity of the Animal Industry in Ghana, the Ghana Society of Animal Production (GSAP) and the Ghana Association of Animal Science (GASA) have lost a great Meat Scientist and a vibrant leader. May the good Lord Himself console the family and all of us. We will miss her, but never will she be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to have known her!

Prof. Mrs. Anna Reynolds Barnes, Fellow of GSAP, former Acting Provost, former Dean and Head of Department, senior colleague, teacher, friend, mother and mentor, rest in perfect peace in the everlasting arms of your maker. In the sure hope of the resurrection, we believe we shall all meet again.

Fare thee well, Prof!
Damirifa Due!!
Rest in Peace!!!
